Edward Vernon Dorsey, Jr.
September 3, 1945 – May 10, 2022
Edward Vernon Dorsey Jr. was born September 3, 1945 at Walter Reed General Hospital (Washington, DC), to Edith Robey Dorsey and Edward Vernon Dorsey. He died on May 10, 2022 in his home state of Maryland due to complications related to congestive heart failure.
He is survived by Penny, his loving wife of 56 years, sister, Patricia Dorsey Stein, son Ed Dorsey (Cyndi), daughter Kelly Elphinstone (Mike), and granddaughter Grace Elphinstone.
Visitation with the family will be at Rausch Funeral Home in Owings, Maryland from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 15, 2022. Memorial service and interment will be at All Saints Episcopal Church in Sunderland, Maryland on Monday, May 16 at 10 a.m., with a luncheon following. While Ed did not have cancer, many of his friends did, and he championed the work of the American Cancer Society as a result (that’s the kind of guy he was); therefore, the family suggests that gifts to ACS, or to All Saints Episcopal Church in Ed’s memory are appropriate and appreciated.
Ed grew up in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and graduated from Frederick Sasscer High School in 1963. He held a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Personnel Management and Labor Relations) from the University of Maryland University College (and was a life-long Terp!). He worked as a civil servant in various capacities within the Prince George’s County Dept. of Public Works for 30 years. If you’ve ever attended an event at the Prince George’s Equestrian Center, you can thank Ed Dorsey; he was also a driving force in returning the County Fair to the county seat.
Ed was known to many folks from his many personal contributions to Calvert County (his home these past 48 years), including the Optimist Club (several times as an officer), Northern Calvert Little League (which he helped found, and in a single season served as President, Coach, and Umpire-in-Chief), youth soccer, Friends of the Library, and Meals-on-Wheels. With his faithful wife Penny, he was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church for 48 years.

Penny, family and friends,
I was a high schools classmate of Ed and upon hearing about his passing I was flooded with memories of him so long ago. We played on the HS baseball team our Sr. year and at the first practice coach told us in 20 years he never had a losing season. So, we won only one game..and that was the last game of the season..worse than the bad news bears.
At one class reunion he was telling me I should retire since I was in my 60s..I ignored his advice since I enjoyed my work but I told him he was right. I knew better than to argue with Ed! He seemed to be a Marylander through and through and I noted his Testudo email address. I see his photo with the Nationals hat. I was not a frequent HS reunion goer but I always sent the registration fee thinking it could be used for the event..but honest Ed always returned my checks when I did not attend. I remember his Dad and I did not know about him being a war hero until recently. I regret not having called and talked to you lately Ed, but I sadly say goodbye my friend. David Beall
Dear Penny,
I am so sorry to hear about Ed –such an amazing man !! He was the backbone of All Saints Church. I remember fondly his delicious cooking– I would serve and bus tables for The Summer Supper and Pancake Dinners at church. It was fun working with Ed. Fantastic sense of humor. At a vestry retreat many years ago Ed would talk about growing up but mostly he talked about his FAMILY. Family was everything to Ed. He would talk about the Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro. Skye had many horse shows there and he always wanted to hear about the current shows. My prayers go out to you Penny , Tiger, Kelly and Grace. I feel honored to have known Ed Dorsey. Love and Light to all of you.
