Alvin C. Stafford, Jr.

Alvin C. Stafford, Jr., 87, of Port Republic, MD passed away on December 3, 2012 at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home located in Charlotte Hall, MD. Alvin was born December 17, 1924 in Barstow, MD to the late Alvin C. Stafford, Sr. and Clara May (Rawlings) Stafford.
In October of 1940, at the age of 15, he started working at the Calvert Independent. There he learned to become a typesetter for many years. He later became the print shop manager. Alvin was call to duty during WWII and served with the Big Red 1st infantry Division and was one of the first to land on the beaches of France on D-Day, June 6th 1944. He also enjoyed fishing and crabbing on the Patuxent River. Alvin was also a lifetime member of VFW Post 8133, a member of American Legion 274, and a 23 year member of the Calvert Elks Lodge 2620.
In addition to his parents, Alvin was predeceased by his wife Audrey L. Stafford.
He is survived by his daughters Dolly Ann Murphy of Fayetteville, NC, Carolyn Harlow of Port Republic, MD his sons George L. Walker of California, MD, and David E. Walker of Soddy Daisy, TN. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren and his sister Jean Dunagan of Barstow, MD.
The family will receive friends on Monday December 10, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8:00 PM at the Rausch Funeral Home, 4405 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, MD. Interment will take place on Tuesday December 11, 2012, 10:00 AM at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham MD. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Mary’s, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650 and the American Heart Association.
