It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Joseph Borrows Waters III on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2022, at CalvertHealth Medical Center in Prince Frederick, MD. He was 91 years old. Joe had been a resident of Asbury Solomons Assisted Living for more than five years, and his quiet, gentlemanly manner was a blessing to other residents and staff there.

Joe or “Buzz” as he was affectionately known by his family was born July 26, 1931, in Washington, DC, to Rosalind Torreyson Bailey Waters and Joseph Borrows Waters, Jr. Raised in Riverdale, MD, he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1950 and American University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954. He then studied piano at The Juilliard School of Music in New York City and graduated with a Diploma in Piano in 1958.

Returning to Calvert County, Joe taught piano lessons to local students, helped maintain the family farm, and worked for his father’s real estate business, J.B. Waters & Associates, in Prince Frederick. Following his father’s unexpected death in November 1963, Joe ran the family business for 54 years, working well into his eighties. He was devoted to carrying on his father’s legacy with the real estate business and family farm, and cared for his mother there until her death in August 1981. With colleagues Dorothy Owens and Dick Alexander, he developed many parcels of land in the county. Joe was well-respected and liked by all who knew him for his honesty and down-to-earth manner. He knew everyone in the county and most knew him. A longtime parishioner and supporter of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, he volunteered for many years playing the organ, and was a 3rd Degree member of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Council 11259 of the Knights of Columbus. Unwaveringly pro-life, he marched many years at the March for Life in Washington, DC, and supported Birthright, an organization helping women and their unborn babies, as well as numerous other charities and organizations. A most kind and thoughtful soul, he was always willing to help anyone in need.

Joe lived most of his life at the family farm, Laveille Place, in Port Republic, MD. He had a tireless work ethic, and enjoyed working on projects and machinery around the farm, often tinkering with and repairing equipment before going into the office. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family, joining them for dinners, and hosting gatherings at his farm. He loved playing his beautiful Steinway piano, and advocated for his nieces and nephews to play. His family has many happy memories hearing him play.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Rosalind Waters; his sister, Mary Patricia Waters Cammack; his nephew, Jacob Bailey Zseleczky; his niece-in-law, Faith Dowd Zseleczky; his niece, Emilia Mary Zseleczky Marley; and his brother-in-law, Emil Jacob Zseleczky. He is survived by his sister, Rosalind Jeanne Waters Zseleczky, and brother-in-law, Robert Edmund Cammack. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, numerous grandnieces and grandnephews, one great-grandniece, one great-grandnephew, and several cousins.

The family will receive friends at Rausch Funeral Home, 4405 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, MD, on January 10, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A viewing will be held January 11, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, located at 105 Vianney Lane, Prince Frederick, MD. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 am with the Reverend Joseph Pierce officiating. A reception will follow at the St. John Vianney Parish Center in the Vianney Room. Interment will be at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, MD, Friday January 13, 2023 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Asbury Solomon’s Benevolent Care Fund, Birthright of Prince Frederick, or St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

January 5 – Obituary: Joseph Borrows Waters, III

My husband and I extend our condolences to the Waters family. My mother, Dorothy Owens, worked as a realtor with Mr. Waters for years and joined with him in developing some parcels of land in Calvert County. It is ironic that Mr. Waters passed away on Christmas Eve, as he spent many Christmas Eves with our family at White Oak Farm, enjoying company and food, until our mother passed away suddenly many years ago.

Again, our condolences.

To the family of Joseph (Buzzy) Waters – Buzzy and I were friends when we were young and lived in University Park, MD.
We kept in touch for many years; the last few years we failed to continue. My sympathy to all of his family. He was a very special person and friend.
