Sherrill Franklin Munn
July 7, 1946 – October 12, 2022
Sherrill Franklin Munn, 76, of Sunderland, passed away peacefully October 12, 2022, at his home. He was born July 7, 1946, in Oklahoma City, OK, to Luther (Luke) Eugene and Carrie Estelle (Sherrill) Munn. Sherrill grew up in Oklahoma where he attended Norman High School before his family moved to California during his senior year. He graduated from Buena High School in 1964. Sherrill then studied religion and philosophy at Pasadena College, Pasadena, CA, graduating in 1968. He moved to Kansas City, MO, to attend seminary at Nazarene Theological Seminary, graduating in 1971. Sherrill later attended Boston University where he studied textual and historical studies, graduating with a PhD in 1980. Sherrill pastored at a church in New England before moving to Idaho where he taught at Northwest Nazarene College. While in Idaho, he joined the National Guard and later joined the United States Army. He would embark on a 29+-year career as a US Army Chaplain, retiring in 2008. Sherrill was initially stationed at Fort Sill, OK and served in Northern Germany during the Cold War. Sherrill married his wife Mary Ann in May 1999. They were transferred to Seoul, South Korea, shortly after where they spent 2-1/2 years. Sherrill was promoted to Colonel while in South Korea. They moved to Stuttgart, Germany, in 2002 where Sherrill served IMCOM Chaplain in Stuttgart and USAEUR Chaplain in Heidelberg. In 2005, Sherrill and Mary Ann returned to the United States, settling in Sunderland, MD. Sherrill worked for the Army Corps of Engineers as its Command Chaplain. This assignment allowed him to travel extensively. He spent a lot of his time in New Orleans helping Corps of Engineer military and civilians after Hurricane Katrina. Following his retirement, Sherrill worked as a civil servant for the Army Corps of Engineers where he developed an Army Readiness Program focusing on helping civilian families of those deployed.
After settling in Sunderland, Sherrill and Mary Ann joined All Saints Episcopal Church and Sherrill was privileged to preach one Sunday a quarter. Their church friends quickly became family, and they started several groups including Les Saints du Vin Wine Tasting Group and a Bible study group. Their love for European markets led them to start the Christmas Market in 2006 and the Calvert Arts Festival in 2007 focusing on local artisans who could sell their foods, beverages, and creations locally as opposed to traveling all over the state. These events are still held at All Saints and have grown into very popular and successful events in the community. Sherrill was also a Master Gardener and loved teaching others how to garden. He and Mary Ann started Project Spudnik, with coordination with Mary Burke and Paul Dickson, teaching children how to garden and grow vegetables. The Project has blossomed over the years with more than 700 pounds of food being grown and donated to local food banks every year.
Sherrill enjoyed spending time with others. Whether it was traveling around the world with his family or hosting a dinner for the dinner group. Sherrill loved learning, traveling, fishing, golf, dancing, and bird watching. He will be remembered as a kind man with a blended, loving family. Sherrill accepted Mary Ann’s children as his own and he will be greatly missed.
Sherrill is survived by his loving wife Mary Ann Munn; daughter Carrie Ashcraft (Chris) of Springville, UT; son Jon Munn (Stacia) of Boise, ID; stepsons Larry Hourclé (Allison) of Alexandria, VA; Joe Hourclé of Upper Marlboro, MD; and Chris Hourclé (Kim Ballard) of Gorham, ME; brother Winston Munn (Shelia) of Tulsa, OK; grandchildren Larson Ashcraft (Calley), Damon Ashcraft, Karac Ashcraft (Teija), Mariah Young (Paul), Grace Ashcraft; Maddox and Orion Munn, and Hank Taylor; Jake, Josh, and Ryan Hourclé,; and great-grandchildren Rory, Cohen, and Josephine Ashcraft.

I knew Sherrill through his amazing work teaching young and old about potatoes. What an amazing and enthusiastic teacher. He will be missed by so many, including his Master Gardener family, whose lives he gently touched. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
Dear Mary Ann,
We are so deeply saddened to hear the news of Sherrill’s passing. He was such a kind-hearted person. As fellow neighbors who once lived adjacent to “the bog” we remember his love of all the resident birds and wildlife. And of course, there was the annual Halloween celebration! Our deepest condolences. Diane and Bill
Dear Mary Ann and Family,
Our hearts were deeply saddened with hearing of the sad news that Sherrill had transitioned. He was one of the best chaplains we have ever served with in the Army. He was kindhearted, intelligent and honest. Many people come in your life and leave, but Sherrill touched our lives and left a spiritual legacy. He made an eternal difference in our lives. A soldier, a servant and a shepherd of God who completed his mission with excellence.
He was a great great Guy! He would call and check up on me while in the Hospital assuring me that things will get better and that God is always by my side helping me heal and give me the strength to do what I needed to do it to get better and feeling better and get out of the hospital and route all my experiences with him. Whenever I would approach him he’ll always have a smile on his face and we could talk about just bought anything! It breaks my heart that he’s gone I wish I had more time to have gotten to know him better but not only is it always and forever be by our side but our hearts God bless and thank you Mr. MUNN for everything you’re most certainly will be Remembered and looked back and cherish his time on this earth!
Here is the prime example of what true gentleman of faith should be! And thank you for everything Mr. Munn! You surely will be missed❤️❤️

Mary Ann I was stunned when I googled Chaplain Munn’s name and saw this. This is Richard Rios his Chaplain Assistant at the Army Corps of Engineers. I will always remember CH Munn by his Antique hobby, he got me into it. My deepest condolences to you and your family.
